RAUDISANDUR beach

w drodze do latrabjarg odwiedzilysmy jeszcze jedno ciekawe miejsce - plaze 'czerwone piaski' (raudisandur, dojazd droga 614 w strone sandsfjoll).

on our way to latrabjarg we visited another interesting place 'red sands' beach -raudisandur.
(road no 614, to sandfjoll)
I have to mention that road no 614 (as well as 612) was rather difficult and I very much appreciated coming back to road no 62 next day. 614 and 612 are bad quality, narrow, winding and in some places very steep.

we really liked raudisandur. we were not sure how to get there exactly (as it is a 30mins walk from the road) but now we can tell you, there are 3 possibilities:

1 car park at the black church (and small campsite) and walk towards the sea (I think that you'll need to cross some water before getting to the beach itself, as I think sea cuts it off in high tide
2. car park 500yards further west, at the farm (path towards the sea, still you'll need to cross some water) we chosen this option
3 I think you may be able to drive further, pass the farm somehow and drive to the very end of the beach, but not sure, this may be for 4x4 only

as I mentioned, we parked at the farm and walked across green meadow towards the sea. there are many paths, they all seem to be disappearing at some point, so we had to find our own way :)

small warning:
i'm not sure if you already met arctic tarns? I came across them in Scotland therefore I knew how to behave near them, but if you have never seen them 'close' please read this.
wherever in Iceland you'll go, you'll come across them, sooner or later. this is definite. arctic tarns are small sea birds, they nest on the ground, in the grass. if they decide you are dangerous to them (or the nests) they will attack you viciously. big groups of them will cry and attack, they'll never give up and won't let you be until you leave their nesting area. they're not afraid of you and they're really vicious.
you have to remember that they're not dangerous to you. they will attack but will never touch you. but if you try to defend yourselves and waive your hands etc you may hit them and damage/cripple them.
so it's worth to know -if you're attacked just raise your hand high (still) or a walking pole, they will attack the highest point 'of you'.

as I said, they're not dangerous, but at first contact they may remind you of horror 'birds'  :)

musialysmy przekroczyc nieco wody by dostac sie do plazy, ale obylo sie bez zdejmowania butow

we had to cross some water before set our feet on the beach, but water was very shallow, no need to take shoes off

road no 614 from the fjord down to sandsfjoll. this was the only road in Iceland where I got stressed. (bea even more, she sat on the right, precipice side..) driving down this road, dead slow, I already worried about driving back up.. (and believe me, I have already seen some difficult roads..) this pic is good, but doesn't do the justice to this bloody road..
